Marriage Services

"And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in peace and tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your hearts: Verily in that are sigs for those who reflect."

[Qur'an 30:21]

The Jefferson Muslim Association provides Nikah and Marriage services for Muslims according to the Islamic teachings of marriage principles.

We at the Jefferson Muslim Association would love to help you get married and fulfill a great Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Here are the steps that you need to take to have your marriage taken care of at the Jefferson Muslim Association. Please follow the instructions provided below.

Make an appointment with the Imam and discuss your plans.

Download the Marriage Request Application, fill all fields and submit to the Imam.

Obtain a marriage license from the Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court or your respective parish. (Please see details below.)

The bride and groom must mutually agree on a specific amount as Mahr (dowry)

The presence of two Muslim male witnesses for the groom and a guardian (wali) for the bride are required.

The bride’s father  is considered to be the guardian (wali) of the bride by default. In the absence of the father, the Imam will guide the future couple to possible alternatives depending on circumstances.

Please bring the following documents to the appointment:

Original copy of the Louisiana Marriage License.

(see below for information and locations for obtaining Louisiana Marriage Licenses.)

Proper photo identification cards/passports with copies for:

The groom, the bride, two witnesses and the guardian (if applicable).

At the Masjid, you will fill up a marriage form and will be issued a certificate with the official seal from JMA.

With consultation and approval of the bride, the groom will offer, in writing, the dowry (mahr) to the bride. The amount of the dowry will be recorded on the marriage certificate.

The details of the nikah will be recorded on a document which will be signed by the bride, groom, guardian (wali), and the witnesses. Jefferson Muslim Association will produce a marriage certificate and provide a copy to both the bride and the groom.

The Imam will officiate the ceremony and will sign your JMA marriage certificate and official license and  and submit it for you.
